This story was a nicely paced read. It had a great mystery/suspense hook to it. Who had made young Mr.Bradford disappear from the streets of London?Emma was a well developed character and consistent to herself throughout. She couldn't be either 'mousey' or 'missish' and have survived helping to raise her three younger siblings. She generally was dutiful to her family and to the conventions of society. But underneath it all, she was well read, quietly assertive, and aware of what she had to offer to others.I liked Donovan Connor, Duke of Lowe, who long ago tired of the society sycophants cozying up to him to obtain the benefits of his title. When he found a correspondent who was not impressed or intimidated by him, he clutched that connection tightly, even though they had never met, and she had no idea of his true identity.Teaming up to attempt to solve the mystery of her brother's sudden disappearance, they learn about the people behind their letters and deepen their connection. Donovan has to learn to trust that Emma will continue to like the man more than the title. Emma needs to deal with her rapidly approaching marriage to a man she does not much like.But the realities that are exposed when her brother is finally discovered could tear their lives to shreds.I received an ARC copy of this story from the author and voluntarily chose to share my review. Miss Emma Bradford has no regrets about choosing to raise her siblings and is resigned that marriage is not in her future. She has been corresponding with Donovan Connor, and is unaware that he is actually the Duke of Lowe. The Duke is tired of woman only interested in his title and admires Emma.When he brother goes missing she travels to London and seeks Donovan’s help in finding her brother. He does not reveal who he is but acts as an investigator to assist her in locating her brother. Just before traveling to London, her Aunt arranges her engagement to a man she doe not like but seems resigned to her fate.There are many questions? Why was Benjamin kidnapped? He is not a noble but a solicitor. Why after all this time, did her Aunt arrange her engagement? Is it possible the Duke’s parents were murdered or was it truly an accident?You need to read this story filled with mystery, romance, twists and turns and incidents of the past that surprisingly come to light. I generally tend to speculate on the outcome of the mystery in most books and am often correct, but not this time.I received an ARC copy of this book and highly recommend it.
